Jahara is a Christian Rehab
WE MADE A DECISION
We know that the 12 step programme is a spiritual programme. This does not mean that we have to be religious but it does mean that we cannot continue to live life on our own terms and conditions. We have to surrender to a process.
Jahara Treatment Centre is a Christian Centre but we are open and welcoming of all. The Christian principles are taught purely through the way that we live. It is each persons own journey and they are free to take whatever direction they choose.
Jahara Treatment Centre hosts its own church service every Sunday with our own praise and worship band. Although we attempt to keep the Christian element out of the day to day programme it is incorporated in weekly bible studies, in morning prayer groups and in specialised Easter week activities.
Mission Statement
2 Corinthians 4
1 And so, since God in all His mercy has given us this wonderful ministry, we never give up. 2 We reject all shameful and underhanded methods. We do not try to trick anyone and we do not distort the word of God. We tell the truth before God, and all who are honest know that...
...5 We don’t go around preaching about ourselves; we preach about Christ Jesus, the Lord. All we say about ourselves is that we are your servants because of what Jesus has done for us. 6 For God who said “let there be light in the darkness,” has made us understand that this light is the brightness of the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ....
Choosing the right drug rehab…
let’s be honest…
Realising that someone you love may have a problem is hard enough, deciding how to help them is utterly overwhelming. Most families have a flawed perception about rehab and so generally don’t want to go that route believing that there has to be another way. There is such a bad stigma attached to the word “addict” and “rehab” that most people will do everything in their power to avoid having to make this tough decision.
Making the decision to send your loved one to rehab is tough enough, finding the right rehab even tougher. Many people would have first tried psychologists, doctors and/ or psychiatrists in their attempt to help someone out of addiction believing that their loved one cannot be an “addict”. 9 times out of 10 it is generally a massive crisis that brings the individual to a point of choosing rehabilitation and it is in this time of crisis that one of the most important life-changing decisions needs to be made.
Most people look for the quickest solution - the one they feel will interrupt their lives the least. They cannot see their loved ones addiction as being that bad and therefor it does not warrant an intensive long-term treatment. When they phone around they discover that rehabilitation can be between 21 days and 12 months and can cost between R4,000.00 - R130,000.00 a month. The overwhelming amount of rehabs available does not make matters any easier and to make it worst most people have no idea what they are even looking for.
You are generally lucky if you know of someone who has been down this road before and can steer you in the right direction but even then rehab is not a one size fits all. Generally people keep their addiction a secret and so are not forthcoming with information and more importantly the one looking for rehab is still full of shame and so not publicly asking for advice and guidance. It is a terrible place to be needing to help a loved one, but having no clue where to turn and even worse, you have no available resources to help.
Top tip #1
Join a local support group immediately. They are generally free and they have experience with many rehab options out there. You will find families in similar situations who will happily help and guide you and more importantly you will find support from people who have been where you are. H.E.A.L. is a great place to start (www.healministries.com). They have no affiliation with any specific centre and will help assess what kind of rehab is best suited and within your budget.
Topi tip #2
Do not look for the shortest option. Your loved one has an illness that requires comprehensive psychological treatment that takes time. A short term program may work for you but generally longer term is better - this again depends on the person needing the help but allow the “professionals” to help you assess this. Trying to get this all behind you as quickly as possible is not the best way to approach this decision.
Top tip #3
Do not look for the closest option. It is often better for the individual to be further away from their place of resource and their family in order to have the space and time to focus on their treatment. If you do choose long-term treatment visits are generally only allowed every 4-6 weeks and so the family do not have to be close by. The location can provide a very tranquil and peaceful setting for healing and should be somewhere that promotes this.
Top tip #4
It is crucial that you get the best value for the money being invested. If you cannot afford rehab but have a medical aid there are treatment centres that will assist you with a 3 month program. There are some good rehab centres out there for approximately R7,000.00 a month but again it is not a one size fits all and certain people require specific types of treatment. One has to view rehabilitation as a medical expense for a medical condition and as we know this is often not cheap. It is an investment being made into the future of the individual and should be seen as such. Many people will invest lots of money into studies, vehicles, flats etc all in the hopes that these will get the individual on the straight and narrow. If the individual does not receive the best possible treatment any further investment into their lives will most likely be wasted.
Top tip #5
Do your homework and phone around. Evaluate the type of program, find out how many patients they have at any given time, find out how many counsellors they have (there should be no more than 10 patients per counsellor - less is alway better), find out about their medical department and what their stance is on psychiatric medication. Ask how many hours of labour do they do a day, how many group sessions they have, how many lectures do they have a week. Get as much information as you can so you can make an informed decision. Although gratitude, humility, hard work and spirituality are all required for recovery there are many ways of achieving these things. A program only focused on spirituality or hard labour is not going to achieve the desired outcome.
Top tip #6
Make sure you feel comfortable with the centre and the feedback and advice given to you. If you can go and check the place out and see what you feel about it. If you don’t get a good feeling trust your gut. This is one of the most important decisions anyone will have to make - ensure that you feel as though you are making the right one. Find the right people to help you with this decision - you are not alone.
No centre can guarantee success. Any rehab centre should have a good balance between psychological treatment, spiritual Treatment and physical treatment. One cannot make one more important than the other. Your best option at this point is to ask for help from a support group or to phone a support group and get some direction.
We are always happy to talk you through the different options and to give you some guidance and direction during this difficult time. Please do not hesitate to call us no matter what your circumstance is and one of our counsellors will happily assist. You may not be able to come to Jahara but that does not mean we can’t help you find the right option.
You can call us anytime on 0711001639.
Recovering from Addiction
At the heart of every addict is a complex system of very flawed beliefs that the individual has developed about themselves and the world around them over a long period of time. The root cause of these flawed beliefs often stem from feelings of fear, self-doubt and social anxieties. Outside of the “control” of their addiction normally lies a very insecure individual who sees little worth in themselves.
Addicts generally do not see themselves the way others do - especially prior to addiction taking over. Addicts are normally very intelligent, although believe they are stupid, very well-liked, although believe nobody could ever like them and seriously capable, although they see themselves as failures and incapable. This delusional perception often drives them into addiction where they find purpose, meaning and an escape from the misperception they have of themselves and the world around them. The drug and the culture of addiction provides a solution to their own self-developed disillusioned view of themselves and the world.
Prior to addiction creeping in those that are crippled with the illness are generally very caring, loving, soft and empathetic people. They are at the very core some of the nicest and most gentlest souls which through their experience of life have come to see these characteristics as a weakness. The addiction is developed in order to help them hide this “weakness” and creates in them the opposite - a cold, callous, detached persona that in their own mind they see as being a “safer” option. Removing the “safety” of their drug of choice without helping them discover that the gentleness inside them is not a weakness but a strength will never work and generally just pushes them into their greatest fears.
Recovery from addiction revolves around one simple truth - the addict is not a failure, is not inadequate, is not doomed to be rejected, unloved or neglected in fact he/she is fully capable, fully loveable and a phenomenal contributing member of society - they just need to embrace what they once saw as a weakness and turn it into a strength. They need to become the kind, compassionate, caring souls that deep down they know they are. They need to overcome their fear that these characteristics will leave them at the mercy of a cruel world and realise that the development of these characteristics will in fact empower them and set them apart, in a good way, from the world.
This is of course easier said than done and involves a very in-depth treatment approach that challenges the very flaws of their perceptions, deals with the experiences that they have used to justify and validate their flawed beliefs and perceptions and to then develop a brand new set of beliefs which will drive an entirely new purpose and passion for life.
Who needs to come to a drug rehab?
There are so many misperceptions out there about what a Drug Rehabilitation Centre actually does. Maybe not so much a misperception but perhaps a bad reputation caused over decades of bad experiences and bad rehab practices and programs. It is unfortunate that many do not understand the benefit of a great rehabilitation program.
Jahara Treatment Centre has completely changed the approach to treating addiction and other associated disorders and problems. We offer a comprehensive program that many who attend indicate would benefit everyone - not just the drug addicts or alcoholics. In fact many have commented that it would make for an excellent gap year experience to learn about yourself, your purpose and how to survive in the world today.
Many loved ones of those who have been fortunate enough to come to Jahara often indicate that they would love to come and do the program. The ability to take a time out and to rediscover who you are and more importantly who you want to be is an extraordinary opportunity that sadly many are never afforded.
Jahara Treatment Centre is far from the “old school”, labour intensive, super spiritualized program and Centre’s that many have become accustomed too. Rehabilitation is no longer seem as a punishment for a moral problem but a comprehensive treatment program for those who struggle with addiction. Individuals who fall into addiction are often those individuals who have so much talent, are super intelligent and have potential that is not seen in most of society. They were once the top students, the best sportsman, the softest and most gentlest souls. Their illness has robbed them of this and all they need is the right support to get it back.
We provide a therapeutic community structure that creates a safe atmosphere and environment for those in our care to truly get to challenge and come to know oneself. A place where through the guidance and direction of trained and qualified professionals one is able to completely reinvent and redefine yourself from the ground up. A place to rediscover your underlying talents and gifts and to harness the drive and motivation once put into addiction into a meaningful life.
Jahara provides a place where you can deal with your past, learn about your emotions and the emotions of others, develop compassion and empathy and practice the virtues that make for a productive and fully functioning member of society. This program guides you towards your purpose and opens the doors for a life-long journey of success and blessings.
An addiction brings ones life crashing down. Life becomes completely unmanageable and unproductive and the consequences become life-threatening. This is the catalyst that pushes families and individuals to seek help. To reclaim their life and their purpose and to deal with the underlying driving factors that cause individuals to seek out behaviors and substances that give them a sense of control, purpose and belonging. What seems to be the worst thing that could ever happen to someone quickly becomes the best thing that could have ever happened to them once they get into the right treatment and realize what they actually posses - a drive and determination to live an extraordinary life.
If we are honest many who have been on the receiving end of someone else’s addiction often feel that they too need some form of therapeutic intervention - and they do. They too have lost themselves in the chaos. They too feel as if their own hopes and dreams have been robbed from them. They too wish for a way out. It is our experience that once a loved one finds true recovery the benefits ripple through the family and through society. This recovery process will benefit anyone who is involved in the most extraordinary ways.
If you or your family is being robbed by addiction find the right kind of help today. Put everything on hold and redirect your focus toward rediscovering yourself. Reclaim what is rightfully yours and you and your family will reap the rewards for the rest of your life. Recovery is probably the most beautiful thing that will ever happen to you and your family.
